The online web serial Quarterlife started out on MyspaceTV and was then the first ever “online soap” bought by a traditional media company. NBC took the popular web serial under its wings and about a week ago the first episode aired. The wings didn’t get Quarterlife that very high though until it crashed with a very low (measured in traditional media stats) counter view. It interesting to think about what made this online success the exact opposite when broadcasted on regular TV. Apparently the demographics are not the same and I think that when you take something produced for the web and put it on TV you miss out an important part, interaction and participation. It’s yet a very early market that is being tested constantly. We’ll see if someone in the future will be able to capture the essence of both media channels and make them work side by side.
